FIRST SIGHT

She is looking at the sky and gazing at stars from her bedroom window in the cold and dreary night of December. Her bedroom’s walls are all filled with the pictures of her mother. On the left corner of her bedroom is her study table with Laptop kept on it. In front of the desk lays her cozy king sized bed. And many soft toys are kept on her bed. Her bedroom looks very neat. She is trying to make different patterns with the stars. It is almost midnight. But she is still not feeling sleepy. She had completed all her homework as well as household work. Then after sometime she got bored by gazing and making patterns so she goes to her bed to sleep. She has to get up early in the morning as she needs to prepare breakfast for her grandpa. She is sleeping soundly. Suddenly she mumbles in her sleep,” Mummy! Where are you? Why did you leave me? Was I so bad that you left me and went to Jesus? I love you mummy and miss you a lot”

She was sitting in a hall surrounded by all her family members. Everyone was looking at her as if she were a stranger. She felt like crying. But suddenly the door of the hall opened and he entered. She didn’t know who he was but he looked at her with eyes full of love and asked her to follow him. She wanted to go with him but she was not able to move from her place. Then he lifted her. And she opened her eyes.

She shouted,” no!” She wished that this dream would continue. She wanted to know who that boy was. Why did he look at her with eyes full of love? Why did he care for her? Why was he in pain when she was sad? She wanted the answers of all these questions so she tried to sleep and tried to see that dream again. But as you know it’s quite impossible to see the same dream which has broken. So finally accepting her defeat she tried to sleep and soon she was sleeping soundly. She didn’t dream again that night.

Her name is Shreya Khan Bells. She is the cutest girl of her class. She is seventeen years. She lives in Himpur, a small hill station of North-East India. Her mother Mary Bells died when she was only 10yrs old. And her father Shahid Khan, the big superstar of the country, left her with her maternal grandfather as he had no time to take care of a growing teenage daughter. But Shreya, she never held any grudge against him. She still loves him very much and believes that one day her father will realize his mistake and will take her to his own world away from her drunken grandpa. She has no friends. No, you are making wrong conclusions. She has many friends but she doesn’t believe that they are her true friends.

In the morning the sunlight entered her bedroom. Seeing the sunlight she woke up and looked outside the window. She could now hear the bells ringing in church and chirping of birds from the nearby park. Their next door neighbor Mr. Thomas was washing his car. The dogs and cats were wandering aimlessly on the streets. Mrs. Shania was shouting at her servant as he forgot to take Brownie out for a morning walk. She was enjoying this morning. Something new was there in this morning but she was not able to figure it out. Then suddenly Mr. Bells called,”Shreya, where is my breakfast? Do you want your 60 year old grandpa to do all the cooking work and all that stuff?”

Shreya heard her grandpa shouting and hurriedly went to kitchen to make breakfast for her old grandpa. She makes alloo ka paranthas as it’s her grandpa’s favorite dish. Her grandpa says,”Oh my lovely Shreya! You make such tasty breakfast for me everyday. Thank you very much!” After saying this he walks out of the house to meet his old friends in the nearby park. Now Shreya hurriedly makes coffee for her as it stresses her out. She goes to her bedroom to get ready for her school. Then she takes her bicycle and set off for her school. On her way she goes to the church. The church is situated just a few yards from her home. She keeps her bicycle in front of the small gate of the church and enters. The church is empty except for a kind woman Sister Siselia. She is sitting before the idol of Jesus with her eyes closed.

Sister Siselia is that person in the whole world who prays for Shreya every day. She gives her all the love that a mother gives to her child. Sister Siselia was a very close friend of Mary Bells. She knows Shreya right from her childhood and had seen her growing from a small child to a beautiful young girl. They have never talked to each other as sister Siselia cannot talk but they understand each other very well. That’s a kind of relationship they have.

Shreya very quietly goes near to her and kiss her on her cheek. Sister Siselia immediately realizes that it’s from Shreya and she instantaneously kisses her on her forehead. They both ask each other about their health with eyes. Both nod and then Sister Siselia moves aside to give Shreya some space to sit before Jesus and pray. Then after few minutes she gets up and says goodbye to Sister Siselia and goes out of the church to take her bicycle.

Then she goes to the place where her mother’s dead body is buried. There is no one in the graveyard except for the guard who is sleeping soundly and enjoying his dreams of becoming a hero in the film industry. He is not aware that a teenage girl has just walked past him. Her face shows the signs of pain, separation and sadness. She enters the graveyard with heavy heart and she carries red roses which were her mother’s favorite flowers. When she reaches the grave of her mother she broke off. The tears which were in her eyes but she was not allowing them to flow out, started coming out. But because of years of practice of controlling her feelings she managed to stop those tears in a few minutes. After keeping the flowers on her mother’s grave she quickly walks out of the graveyard.

She rode her bicycle very fast fearing that she would be late for school but she reached school very early, only few students had come. She went to keep her bicycle in the bicycle stand and went to her class. She sat on her usual bench, the fifth bench in the second row. She is the only student who sits alone in her class. She started thinking about her mother. A teardrop fell from her eyes on her pink cheeks. She did not realize that she was crying until he came and swept the tear away. She tilted her head upwards in response.
